Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

The story begins in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. After a short prologue, "road warrior" and former cop Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) is chased down by marauders who run his V8 Interceptor off the road. Shortly after, Max is bound, gagged and designated a universal blood donor for the pale-skinned "War Boys". The War Boys are brainwashed minions of a masked despot named Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) who believe they live a "half-life" where Valhalla awaits them in the afterlife. Immortan Joe, ruler of The Citadel, controls the water supply for masses down below, whilst farming women for breast milk and keeping several Wives to bear his children.

One day, Joe's trusted lieutenant, Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), sets out on a routine supply run with a giant, armoured rig and an escort of several other vehicles. However, when Furiosa takes a sudden detour and heads into the hostile wasteland, Joe realises that his prize "breeders" have fled, smuggled in the rig. He sends his entire army out to recover them and kill Furiosa. Furthermore, one of the Wives, Splendid (Rosie Huntington-Whitely), is carrying Joe's baby which makes her Joe's most valuable "property". Furiosa's plan is to reach the "Green Place", where she was born, a region where crops grow and where there is a future to be had.

Meanwhile, Max is being held in captivity, serving as a "blood bag" for Nux (Nicholas Hoult), an impressionable follower of Immortan Joe. When the rest of Joe's fleet head out, Nux joins them and chains Max to the nose of his vehicle in order to keep his blood topped up. After a desperate pursuit through a lightning sandstorm, Furiosa escapes and Nux crashes his car following a failed attempt to martyr himself. After the storm passes, Max regains consciousness and gets the upper hand on his captor, finding Furiosa nearby who is busy repairing the rig. A skirmish ensues as Max tries to steal the rig, but ultimately Furiosa comes out on top since the rig is fitted with a kill switch that only she can deactivate.

The new travelling companions are pursued into a canyon where a gang of bikers try to take possession of the rig and kill Max and Furiosa's band. Max and Furiosa successfully fend off the gang, but Immortan Joe catches up with them in his own car. Splendid shields Furiosa from Joe's gunfire, but falls under the wheels of Joe's vehicle. Giving up the chase for now, Joe orders the baby to be cut from her dead mother's womb and soon learns that the child was a boy and therefore an heir. The boy doesn't survive and Joe becomes enraged and grief-stricken.

Meanwhile, Max and Furiosa press on into the wasteland, with Nux stowing aboard, punishing himself for failing Immortan Joe. At night, the rig gets trapped in a bog with a war party chasing them, led by The Bullet Farmer (Richard Carter). Max manages to take out the marauders using booby traps, taking their ammo and guns in the process.

The next day, Furiosa notices a familiar landmark from her homeland, a broken electric mast. On the top of the mast, a naked woman is screaming for help, but Max believes her to be bait for a trap. Furiosa exits the rig and shows herself to be a friendly, revealing herself as a native of the Green Place. A group of elderly, but well-armed women emerge and embrace Furiosa. But the reunion goes sour when it transpires that the Green Place was, in fact, the bog-land when the rig had passed through which has long since become uninhabitable.

The following morning, a broken Furiosa decides to abandon the rig and head out on bikes into the desert - a last ditch effort to find possible civilization. Max goes after the group and persuades them all to head back in the direction they came from. His plan involves taking Immortan Joe's war party head-on, driving back through the canyon and decoupling the rig's tanker, thus blocking their pursuers. Once that's achieved, they can return to The Citadel and take control of it's generous resources.

During the final chase, the War Boys use tall poles to swing aboard the rig. Another of the Wives, Toast (Zoe Kravitz), is snatched and taken to Joe. While Max and the others try to fend off the dozens of War Boys, Furiosa goes after Joe, becoming gravely injured in the process. Hanging onto the side of his car, Furiosa attaches a chain to Joe's facemask and throws the chain under the wheels, ripping off his jaw in the process. Meanwhile, Nux sacrifices himself by crashing the damaged rig in the canyon and cutting off the rest of the War Boys, but not before Furiosa, Max and Wives all escape in Immortan Joe's car. With Furiosa on the verge of death, Max gives her a blood transfusion and finally tells her his name.

Back at the Citadel, Max unveils the corpse of Immortan Joe, much to the pleasure of the starved citizens. The water is then switched back on by Joe's servants and Furiosa takes the Wives back to the lush greenery of the Citadel, where they previously escaped - only this time as free women and not as "property". Furiosa looks back to see Max walking away and into the wilderness again and the two share a nod of acknowledgement.
